Background of the Study
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have emerged as crucial actors in disaster relief, particularly in areas where government response may be limited. In Brass Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, these organizations mobilize resources, volunteers, and community networks to provide timely assistance during crises. Their interventions often include emergency medical care, food distribution, shelter provision, and psychosocial support, rooted in the ethos of compassion and service (Ibrahim, 2023). The integration of religious values with humanitarian action fosters a high level of trust and community cooperation, which is essential in mitigating the adverse effects of disasters (Omolade, 2024). However, challenges such as resource constraints, coordination with governmental agencies, and sustainability of aid efforts continue to affect the efficacy of FBO interventions (Afolabi, 2025). This study seeks to evaluate the role and impact of faith-based organizations in disaster relief efforts, examining both their successes and limitations. It further explores how these organizations can enhance their operational effectiveness, align with formal disaster management frameworks, and contribute to building resilient communities in the face of recurring disasters.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the vital contributions of faith-based organizations in Brass, several challenges hinder their full potential in disaster relief. Inadequate funding, limited logistical support, and poor coordination with government agencies often compromise the quality and timeliness of aid provided. These constraints result in suboptimal relief outcomes for affected communities. The study aims to identify the specific obstacles faced by FBOs and propose strategies for improving their effectiveness in disaster management, thereby ensuring that vulnerable populations receive prompt and adequate assistance during emergencies (Ibrahim, 2023; Omolade, 2024).
